The second annual Sealink Stradbroke Ferries Legends Pro-Am
The second annual Sealink Stradbroke Ferries Legends Pro-Am was won by Brad Burns with a 7 under par round of 64 to set a new course record.
Peter Woodward was not able to attend and defend his title from 2018.
Burns started the day with a bogey on the par 4 fourth hole though birdied 6 of the next 8 holes to set up the new course record.
“It is great to come back to North Stradbroke Island given me and my family have been here several times for holidays,” said Burns.
“The course has a good mixture of tough holes and birdie opportunities and given it’s unique setting and views from the clubhouse, today will certainly be a memorable win.”
“Many of the pros have never played here before, some of them have never been on the island at all so hopefully this tournament can help put North Stradbroke Island Golf Club on the map.”
With one hole chosen from each event and almost being at the half way stage of the Tony Hollands Funerals Challenge, Glenn Joyner is at 4 under par holding a two shot lead from several others who are at 2 under par through eight holes.
The First event of Straddies 2019 festival of Golf hotly contested
The Stradbroke VW Scramble was played last Sunday on the 3rd of February 2019 at the North Stradbroke Island Golf Club.The Scramble was contested by golfers from across south east Queensland with Dalby, Wynnum, Canungra and Redcliffe clubs all represented by teams or individuals in the field.
The local Angelic family team of Val, Renardi, Tia and Ginga won by the slimmest of margins with a nett score of 57.625 beating one of the visiting Canungra teams of David Merriman, Arthur Sami, Gary Owen, Guy Cowan on 57.875. Third was the team of Myles Seymore , Desley Grose, Brian Hunt and Sue Surawski on 58.5 nett. With less than a point separating first from third it was a day of fierce competition.
The winning team along with the Stradbroke professional, Andrew Humble will now contest the regional final at Pelican Waters, the Sunshine Coast on the 14th March 2019.
In only its second year the Stradbroke VW Scramble is generating increasing interest from golfers across south east Queensland. As the only Scramble in the Redlands it will continue to grow and draw players from other clubs.
The Scramble is the first event in the 2019 Straddie Festival of Golf. It will be followed in May by the first Straddie Salute Golf Day, then the Straddie Ambrose in July, the Sealink Stradbroke Ferries Pro Am in August and finally the Straddie Community Golf Day in October.
If interest and attendance at the VW Scramble is an indicator each of the festival events will be a sell-out, with excellent fields and friendly but fierce competition.

A Year In Review – 2018
2018 has seen your Club add substantially to its special events calendar. The Holden Scramble played in February was the first event of its kind held on Straddie. The event, held in appalling weather, was won by Brian Debert, Charlie Pearson, Darren Sakaio and Nick Young
Next came the Sealink Straddie VMR Golf Day. This event raised $10,000 for Stradbroke VMR while providing all participants with a day to remember. This event is being renamed the SeaLink Straddie Community Golf Day for 2019.
Then came the Straddie Classic. The Ambrose has always been much loved over the years. It is the event which draws ex members and friends back to the Island for a weekend of fun and reminiscence.
Contested by a near record field the 2018 Ladies Trophy went to the Tart-n-Chicks for the fourth time in a row.
The Stradbroke SeaLink Pro Am was contested in August. The Pro Am has been absent from the Straddie calendar for over 20 years and its return was much applauded. The exit survey for the Pro Am indicates that it will again be a sellout when held in 2019.
Then came the Borey Family Golf Day sponsored by Mazzoni Plant Hire and organized by Russell Borey. It proved to be a wonderful day for all Islanders to celebrate their rich diverse history.
The year was rounded out by the Norman Gardner Trophy played on the 27th of December and organised by the Amity Cricket Club.
This amazingly busy calendar of events will be repeated next year with at least one addition.
In 2019 we will be partnering with Icon events to put on the Straddie Salute Golf Day on the 19th of May.
All of these events cost money and take time to organise. The money comes from sponsors, nomination fees and donations. Allan Ziirsen raised over $10,000 in donations through his Go-Fund-Me site which is an amazing effort.
The ability of such a small Club to make such a huge contribution to the Straddie community and economy is the result of the efforts of the membership and their willingness to volunteer their time and skills.
Stradbroke Ferries VMR Golf Classic
The inaugural Stradbroke Ferries VMR Golf Classic finally arrived after 3 years of planning and raising seed funding, many meetings with and by the committee, several changes of format, over 600 emails, 1000 hrs. of work by the secretary and a few sleepless nights.
What a day Straddie put on, sunny, no wind and an absolutely stunning sunset as the field and guests enjoyed the evening meal on the deck. The competitors came from everywhere. Thank you for the smiley faces and the spirit that the game was played in.
Hosting the Classic has demonstrated the Club’s commitment to its community.
Raising large sums of money is no mean feat at any time. I would like to thank Silbelco for the initial $3500 which we used to employ a professional event organizer to advise and direct the committee through the process. Thank you Brett Holdway.
The club would like to thanks the principal sponsors and the prize pool sponsors who provided a prize pool of just under $ 10,000.
The Straddie businesses and individuals are a very generous lot. The accommodation resorts led by the Straddie pub gave 40 nights accommodation.
Each Sponsor will receive a picture of their prize being awarded and a letter of appreciation.

The Straddie Golf club Gears up for a big 2018
This week the North Stradbroke Island Golf club took delivery of seven new electric golf carts as part of its preparations for 2018.
With the assistance of its major sponsor, Stradbroke Ferries the carts are now safely across the bay and ready to play a part in making 2018 the biggest year the Club has seen in a long time.
The carts have arrived just in time to be used in the Holden Scramble being held this weekend. They will be used to boost the Club’s cart fleet and enable it to run the Stradbroke Ferries VRM Golf Classic and the Straddie Pro Am later in the year.
When not being used in these new events the carts will be used in the Club’s new Eco Tour program.
Over the past five years the Club has invested heavily in planting koala and bird food trees which has made the Club a haven for wildlife.
The new electric carts will enable the public to get close to the animals and indigenous flowers in safety and comfort. Small scale trials have been extremely successful and now with the new fleet of cars the wildlife tours can cater for groups of 25 visitors at a time.
