Playing in the Stradbroke Ferries VMR Golf Classic on the 19th of May will open up a world that you can only wonder at.
Picture this: You’re contemplating your first tee short on Queensland’s most easterly golf club North Stradbroke Island Golf Club. You can see the Glasshouse Mountains 100 miles away. The world lies at your feet and a whole day of golf awaits your pleasure.
But it gets better your all-inclusive $200 registration fee for the Stradbroke Ferries VMR Golf Classic could one day save your life if you ever play on, in or near the sea or on our coastal waterways and need rescue or medical evacuation.
The Straddie Golf Club is rounding up the community to support the North Stradbroke Volunteer Marine Rescue which has been doing it tough as its major Island sponsor, Sibelco is leaving town. This event is sponsored by Stradbroke Ferries, the Redland Council, Sibelco and nearly every Island business large and small has put something into the prize pool.
The result of all of this support, apart from prizes, is that your registration pays for everything once you leave the mainland. Your $200 pays for your golf, your buggy, passenger ferry travel, Island travel, meals and complimentary drinks. It also pays for a tour of the Island which includes Point Lookout’s famous gorge walk and a visit to Cylinder Beach voted the best surfing beach in Australia. Bare foot bowls is available for those who wish to play and end or two. Finally your $200 will pay for your evening meal featuring Straddie seafood.
This event is classic old school Australia. Participating in this event is something you can feel proud off and if you beat your handicap on this course you can be doubly proud for this course will definitely try your skills to the limit.
The greens are not 328 or bent or any of the other numbered hybrids. The greens are old school blue couch. This grass has grain. The greens are quick one way and slow the other. They are just another challenge to test your ability on the day.
The course has a slope rating of 105 and is full size at 4812 metres for a complete 18. The course is harder than its rating would indicate as it drops 200 vertical metres from the first tee to the sixth green. This means you are often shooting for a green hidden over the lip of the hill and round the corner.
The fairways are well grassed and in some cases tight with plenty of timber for wayward shots
Brian DeBert of Brian Debert Golf – Australia has visited and done a VBLOG of the course. He noted that a couple of fairways are a bit sandy. This is not unexpected as the whole of Straddie is sand and the course is run and maintained by volunteers many of whom will never see their sixties again. They say volunteering keeps them fit and golf keeps them humble. How true!
If you’ve not been to Straddie before or you’ve been but never seen the course then playing in the Stradbroke Ferries VMR Golf Classic is the perfect excuse for a day out to enjoy a unique island golf experience– Straddie Style. To register email email@example.com or phone 07 34099999.
